It’s awards season in Hollywood, and Memphians are bringing home all kinds of honors.

Five Dollar Cover Amplified” (the companion documentaries for Craig Brewer’s MTV show about Memphis musicians “Five Dollar Cover”) won two Mid-South Emmys. The short documentaries on Ben Nichols and Valerie June won a Cultural Documentary Emmy and the Valerie June piece and Craig Brewer’s “What It Is” won photography Emmys.

I Am a Man: From Memphis, a Lesson in Life”, the story of sanitation workers in Memphis during the Civil Rights Movement, won four Mid-South Emmys: Best Historical Documentary, Best Composer/Arranger (for Scott Bomar), Best Directing, and Best Writing for Programs.

Memphis music legend Booker T. Jones (of Booker T. and the MGs) took home a Best Pop Instrumental Grammy for “Potato Hole”, and originally-from-Memphis indie rockers MGMT were nominated for Best New Artist.

And it’s not over – “The Blind Side”, a movie about an East Memphis family who removes football prodigy Michael Oher from poverty is nominated for Best Picture. Sandra Bullock, who plays Memphis mom Leanne Tuohy, is also up for Best Actress.
